Books vs Movies ?

Well, I honestly don’t watch movies that often anymore. And when I do it’s old favorites like The 90’s Mummy or Clue, or something I didn’t choose but that someone else in the household put on. Shows on the other hand, I tend to binge, esp when my mood is low. Don’t get me wrong though, I love books. I love reading. Curling up in my favorite chair with a book, my cat, and a nice cup of tea is one of my favorite things. But I don’t do it that often, even though I arguably could. So why don’t I? Part of it is that I also really enjoy video games, doing art and hanging with folks. The other part is that I am dyslexic, not severely so, but enough that reading is work, and my brain doesn’t always co-operate.
For those not familiar, Dyslixia is a learning disorder which amoung other things causes letters, or words, parts of sentences, or parts of words, to not be where they’re supposed to be.

In my particular version it’s sometimes words more often chunks of sentences. The best solution I have for this in physical books is using something to guide my eyes such as a bookmark, ruler or even my finger.(I don’t like the latter though.). This is one way that technology is awesome though, thanks to e-readers I have a much easier time reading. Why so? You may ask. And there’s two major reasons, the 1st is that I can increase line spacing. This makes it much easier for me to read one at a time without using something like a ruler to keep track of where I am.(Which makes curling up with a book much easier). The second is that I can change the font. Quite some time ago I discovered the dyslexie font(https://dyslexiefont.com/en/).

This font is designed to be easier for people with dyslexia to read, and it WORKS. These two features alone are enough for me to justify the expense of an e-reader.
But if in some bizarre situation I had to choose between never being able to enjoy a book(be it reading or in the form of an audio book) or never watching tv, I would after much hesitation, humming and hawing choose to exclusively read. This is for a few reasons, one is that reading a good book brings me far more joy then most movies do. And there is also the fact that I’m a writer, I know many writers, and the idea of not reading their work is just…not acceptable. Reading transports me far more than a show can. The characters of a good book feel so much more real then the characters of a tv show to me. Perhaps it’s that I need to actively focus to read, where as shows and movies can be consumed quite passively. To be clear, I am not saying shows and movies don’t elecit emotional or intellectual responses from me, they just aren’t as good at it as books.
Thats my answer, huge shout out to @merit.ahama for hosting these weekly contests/events. I know there’s a prize and all, but just thinking about and writing answers is in and of itself a win for me.
