Well, I honestly don’t watch movies that often anymore. And when I do it’s old favorites like The 90’s Mummy or Clue, or something I didn’t choose but that someone else in the household put on. Shows on the other hand, I tend to binge, esp when my mood is low. Don’t get me wrong though, I love books. I love reading. Curling up in my favorite chair with a book, my cat, and a nice cup of tea is one of my favorite things. But I don’t do it that often, even though I arguably could. So why don’t I? Part of it is that I also really enjoy video games, doing art and hanging with folks. The other part is that I am dyslexic, not severely so, but enough that reading is work, and my brain doesn’t always co-operate.

For those not familiar, Dyslixia is a learning disorder which amoung other things causes letters, or words, parts of sentences, or parts of words, to not be where they’re supposed to be.

In my particular version it’s sometimes words more often chunks of sentences. The best solution I have for this in physical books is using something to guide my eyes such as a bookmark, ruler or even my finger.(I don’t like the latter though.). This is one way that technology is awesome though, thanks to e-readers I have a much easier time reading. Why so? You may ask. And there’s two major reasons, the 1st is that I can increase line spacing. This makes it much easier for me to read one at a time without using something like a ruler to keep track of where I am.(Which makes curling up with a book much easier). The second is that I can change the font. Quite some time ago I discovered the dyslexie font(https://dyslexiefont.com/en/).

This font is designed to be easier for people with dyslexia to read, and it WORKS. These two features alone are enough for me to justify the expense of an e-reader.

But if in some bizarre situation I had to choose between never being able to enjoy a book(be it reading or in the form of an audio book) or never watching tv, I would after much hesitation, humming and hawing choose to exclusively read. This is for a few reasons, one is that reading a good book brings me far more joy then most movies do. And there is also the fact that I’m a writer, I know many writers, and the idea of not reading their work is just…not acceptable. Reading transports me far more than a show can. The characters of a good book feel so much more real then the characters of a tv show to me. Perhaps it’s that I need to actively focus to read, where as shows and movies can be consumed quite passively. To be clear, I am not saying shows and movies don’t elecit emotional or intellectual responses from me, they just aren’t as good at it as books.

Thats my answer, huge shout out to @merit.ahama for hosting these weekly contests/events. I know there’s a prize and all, but just thinking about and writing answers is in and of itself a win for me.

@artofkylin, You have received 1.0000 LOH for posting to Ladies of Hive.
We believe that you should be rewarded for the time and effort spent in creating articles. The goal is to encourage token holders to accumulate and hodl LOH tokens over a long period of time.

Those are very valid reasons for choosing books over movies. So far as one makes you really happy and transports you into a place where everything makes sense, it’s definitely a win.

Thank ya.

I fell in love with reading as soon as I managed to learn how. Even with it being more work for me then the average person.

It must be stressful to read books with dyslexia, good you found a better way to have fun reading anyways. I can imagine reading with your cat and a cup of tea by your side, would be so lovely.

Stressfull isn't quite the right word, tiring more like. But yeah I love it esp when I have my cat and some tea.

Cool there's a dyslexic font that actually works, I didn't know that.
I gave up on movies, half of them I stop after the first 30 minutes so I'll rather watch good (long) series. I even rewatch series I watched 10 years ago, amazing how little I still remember actually 😅

Reading is great but I only do so on summer holidays..

It's so great. The font also has a browser plug in.

I'm so bad for just rewatching stuff. I think I've rewatched Supernatural 5 times now. ><

And does anything in particular stop you from reading more outside of summer holidays?

You're right. While treading a book you're transported into it spiritually, you see yourself acting out the book.
I actually enjoyed reading books back then.

Back then? Have you not read anything in a while? If you need a rec for a good book I highly reccomened the subreddit /suggestmeabook

I haven't read.
Subreddit and suggestmeabook, what are those?

I did not know about the Dyslexie font! I'll have to remember that so I can pass it along to those who need it! Thanks for sharing the info! 💜

You are welcome! Anytime I can spread news of the usefulness of that font I do. I love it. I also use the plugin which puts the whole internet into the dyslexie font, thought it does occasionally messes up stuff but soooo worth it.

@artofkylin...

After seeing your reaction in the Ladies Of Hive Discord... of course I had to come and see!! So then... you left us with an awesomesauce question:

"Feel like being social? Tell me what book, movie or show pulled you in, or captured your imagination most recently."

None of the mentioned... Actually, an album by a band I have listened to since the very early 2000s, "Amplifier". I will just share a video... that way you can enjoy too (I hope). The song is called "Cross Desolve"... Album: Gargantuan...
