The son of one of the old fish house owners called the other day and wanted my husband to build him 12 pigfish traps. These traps are a pain to build, they are made from hardware cloth, which is a wire, not a cloth.
My husband has to cut out the body to the trap, 2 funnels for each, and a top and bottom. You put the body together first, it will make a circle. Next, put the bottom on. Now the 2 funnels go in and cut the holes out of the body for the funnel opening and open the funnels. Put a top on it and cut out a place for the door, and cut doors from the roll of wire. Now it is ready for a latch, which is a piece of heavy wire and bungy cord. We tie a rope onto the trap and have a net cork on the other end of the rope.
I have to work on them with my left hand only, and my husband is having trouble with his wrist hurting from cutting the wire. I would have straight away said no, we are not building them because our hands can not handle the work involved in making them. But here we are, building pigfish traps. Our daughter walked by and said, "this looks like old times".
We use hog rings to put the wire together and the commercial fishing supply place we get them from only had stainless hog rings and they were 17 dollars a pound. My husband was so mad at the price, we used to get the non stainless ones for less than 5 dollars.
