5 frank 1870 Leopold II Koburg

in Silver Gold Stackers9 days ago (edited)

Another day means another coin, and today I will present a disc that comes from Belgium. I have already had some exposure to the monetary system of this country, and the year of minting of this numismat fits perfectly into the period of history I know best. I invite you!

There is a very infamous ranking that presented the people who had the most blood on their hands. The fourth place was just taken by Leopold II, in the top 3 we find Mao Zedong, Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler, respectively. Few people know who the King of the Belgians was and what he did to make it into this ranking. During the reign of this ruler, the Congo belonged to a king who, in his greed, ran a plunder economy. It was all about ivory and rubber. Labour camps were built in the Congo, where conditions were terrible and the local population was regarded as an inferior class of human being. Leopold II, through his moves in the territory, led to the deaths of several to several million people, and the ruler became ‘the fourth greatest criminal in human history’. I have heard that Belgium has decided to remove his monuments, although for the Belgians he was a good ruler. He developed infrastructure, made investments, built up the national treasury and strengthened the national identity of the Belgians. He did all this at the expense of the People in the Congo, and the propaganda effectively hushed this up, so the Belgians of the time were unaware of what was going on in Leopold II Coburg's private colony.

I now turn to a description of the coin. The disc is large and comes from the Brussels mint. The obverse contains the head of Leopold II and two inscriptions, one small ‘LEOP WIENER’, which is the signature of the designer of this disc and one large ‘LEOPOLD II ROI DES BELGES’, it means ‘Leopold II, King of the Belgians.’ The reverse is a little more interesting, we find here a reduced and beautiful Belgian coat of arms, namely a crowned shield with a lion in the centre. The symbol is located between a nicely executed wreath. The reverse also contains information on the vintage and the denomination, as well as the inscription ‘L'UNION FAIT LA FORCE’, meaning ‘unity makes strength’.

Przejdę teraz do opisu monety.

No kidding, brutal is putting it lightly. I read some of the bloody accounts of Belgian Congo of hands being cut off, dead everywhere etc. The ghosts of the past still haunt the country today.
I have an 1873 Belgian 5 Franc in my collection.
History never forgets.

I know, I've read a whole book about it and watched footage of it, I didn't touch on it as much in the post. I think the posts are meant to be an encouragement to explore the history. History never forgets!

What a nice guy! Mass murder just for the fun of it while making millions... Pol Pot of Cambodia is probably next in line after him I'd bet!

Nice coin, great silver!

The next one is someone as far as I remember from imperial Japan, but any criminal is a criminal nothing more.

And the more people they kill just makes them feel more powerful. True narcissistic psychopaths.
