So recently, I have a story to share, and it made me reflect how perseverance can make such a big impact, even though we might not realise it.
And the story goes like this. So in this company, this is this worker who works hard and does many things quietly behind the scenes. Despite not being in the limelight, he enjoys his nature of work, he enjoys working with his teammates, and he is contented with an average salary.
And then came one day, where there was a change in management, and because the new management wasn't familiar with the work that he does behind the scenes, he was ranked all the way at the bottom during the annual performance review. He felt underappreciated, and everyone around him told him it was time to quit and move on to another company, but he decided to stay on because he still enjoyed his work.
And then, there was another change in management soon after, and the new manager was aware of what happened, because being ranked at the bottom of the list definitely stood out. The new manager made effort to understand what this worker was doing, and on top of that, he gave him more opportunities to showcase his strengths, and the meticulous work and positive attitude of this worker managed to garner positive reviews from the management. Eventually, in the next annual performance review, this worker was no longer at the bottom.
From this worker's perspective, nothing changed. The work ethic was still the same. But yet the outcome of two annual performance reviews were so drastically different.
And I felt that this story taught me a little about what perseverance is. Maybe you might say this worker was stubborn and should have moved on, but he persevered and somehow he got lucky, and there was a fresh manager who decided to help this loyal and hardworking worker, and the worker was able to show everyone what he was capable of.
