Moonscars gameplay and first impressions

Not a walk in the park 😅

Moonscars got added to the PS Plus Extra Came Catalog in December 2023. As soon as I saw a brief trailer for this one, I knew it would be a game that I must try.

Moonscars is a 2D Souls-like platformer game developed by Black Mermaid and published by Humble Games. The game was released on September 27, 2022, for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

Indie games like this often get me hooked. Blasphemous and Dead Cells are both great examples of that sort of thing happening to me. Moonscars looked like the exact type of game that I could fall in love with. I quickly found out that it was much more difficult than either of those two games I had played prior.

Some people enjoy seeking the ultimate challenge in gaming. Rarely is that person me though. I don't want all of my games to be easy, but I also don't want a brutally punishing game that leaves me frustrated more often than not. If I want to get blasted into the ground to die over and over, I'll just play a competitive multiplayer game instead of a Souls-like.

My first thought of Moonscars was, wow this is awesome. Then I ran into a difficult portion very early on and quickly became frustrated. Many gameplay mechanics were being thrown at me at once and it was all just a lot. I wasn't really in the mood for this game after all.
