Finished this last night! The book was surprisingly short yet powerful. I honestly knew nothing of the book going in but this book has left me researching more about what went on because I really had no knowledge of all this before. I think the sense of trepidation stayed through the end and never really let up and that’s part of what made it so effective. Cristian’s journey, his paranoia, guilt, fear, and quiet defiance, like everything felt so grounded in reality that you’re constantly reminded this was someone’s reality once or perhaps still is in certain parts of the world currently while we're unaware. And that knowledge lingers. I really liked the way the author handled this. The fear, mistrust, and tension weren’t just told—they were felt through the little moments. I also appreciated how the book didn’t end with a neat bow? It’s not about a magical revolution or one hero saving the day but rather survival, truth, and reclaiming of identity bit by bit and that's what makes you really feel it in your bones. Some parts felt a little rushed toward the end, especially the reveal about Liliana and the final resolution and that's perhaps the only reason I'm going with a 4 and not a 5. I would’ve liked a bit more emotional unpacking there. But still, I did find it emotionally resonant, especially the author’s note and the real testimonies woven in like it grounded the fiction in reality, and gave weight to the story beyond just the plot. It’s the kind of book that leaves you sitting with the question: What would I have done? And that question haunts you because there are no easy answers.
